High Velocity and Conventional Air Conditioning – How can you tell the Difference?

 

 

There are so many people in the world who have no clue what each of these are let alone the difference. Whether you have a science background or not, one tends to get confused when they hear the term conventional AC next to high velocity. That is exactly the reason why you must understand which is which so it could help you in your daily life. That, or so you can just sound smarter in front of your friends and family.

The difference between the two is based on three things:

Circulation – Difference in how they work:

If you remember science class correctly, there are different ways in which air rises and falls. This forms the basis for the circulation in different spaces. A conventional AC system depends on the method of diffusion which is the spontaneous spreading of air particles. The diffusion helps spread cool air particles that enter the room through a vent. Laws of thermodynamics apply here in which hot air rises while cold air falls. This forms the conventional currents. The circulation of the air depends on where you place the vents.

High velocity Air Conditioning systems depend on the effects of aspiration. This is when air particles enter a space in such speed that they create air currents. These air currents then move on to assist in circulating the cooled air around the room. The aspiration method is best known for its use in homes near the sea or where the area is high in humidity.

The Kind of Ducting Used:

Ducts help to take the cool air all around a building or home. The kind of ducts that are installed depend on the kind of building it is as well as the need. Conventional AC systems require strong metal ducts. These metal ducts are 6” in diameter and have two branches that help with supply and intake of cool air. Because of the diameter of the ducts, the architect has to make sure there is enough space for them to be installed throughout the building.

High velocity AC systems however use smaller ducts that are made up of insulated aluminum tubes. These tubes are three times lesser the size of the other and can fit into any tight spot. They are usually lined inside the walls and are chosen for older homes. A much more commercial use depends on the size of the area they are to be installed in.

What each Costs?

Although the high velocity tubes are smaller in size, they are higher in price than the conventional AC ducts. This is due to the kind of material they use and the per meter cost of it. The overall cost also depends on the kind of structure you want them to be retrofitted in. The good thing about high velocity tubes is that they require lesser construction cost therefore both are at the same page. It all depends on you and your need in the end.
